Grouped by standard (winter) offset from the 2026e IANA tz database. “Time now” is calculated live: the first line is standard time at that offset; where some zones of the row are on daylight saving time right now, their local time is shown underneath.
How to read the world time zone map
The map colours every time zone by its UTC offset at this moment. Hover over a zone on a computer, or tap it on a phone, to see its name, its current local time and date, its offset from UTC, whether daylight saving time is on, when the clocks next change and the biggest places in it. Your own time zone is shown in bright lime, worked out from your device’s settings.
The shaded band is the night side of the Earth, drawn from the sun’s position this minute. City labels show the live local time, and the strip under the map lists the current time at each whole-hour offset from UTC−11 to UTC+12.
Why time zones exist
The Earth turns 15 degrees every hour, so noon arrives an hour later for every 15 degrees you go west. Before time zones, every town kept its own solar time, which made railway timetables a mess. Standard time zones, each roughly 15 degrees wide and offset from Greenwich, fixed that. Today the lines bend around national and state borders, because each country decides its own time. The US time zone boundaries, for example, are set by the Department of Transportation, county by county (49 CFR Part 71).
Daylight saving time moves the map
About a third of the world’s zones shift their clocks for part of the year. The US moves its clocks forward on the second Sunday in March and back on the first Sunday in November, which in 2026 means March 8 and November 1 (NIST: Daylight Saving Time Rules). The European Union changes at 01:00 UTC on the last Sunday in March and October: March 29 and October 25 in 2026 (EU Directive 2000/84/EC). Between October 25 and November 1, New York is only 5 hours behind London and Stockholm instead of the usual 5 and 6. See daylight saving time 2026.
2026 was a busy year for time zones
Several places stopped changing their clocks in 2026, according to the IANA time zone database: British Columbia stays on UTC−7 all year, Alberta and the Northwest Territories stay on UTC−6, Manitoba moves to permanent UTC−5 at the end of October, and Morocco went back to permanent UTC+0 on September 20 (IANA tz database NEWS). In the US, the Sunshine Protection Act passed the House on July 14, 2026, but not the Senate, so US clocks still fall back on November 1 (H.R.139 on Congress.gov). The map handles all of this automatically.
Plan across time zones
The converter and meeting planner above lines up a 24-hour day for every city you add. Green hours are normal work hours (9 to 5) and the lime outline marks hours when everyone is at work. Copy the share link to send the plan: the other person sees the same moment in their own time. For the United States and Europe, use the US time zone map and the Europe time zone map.
Time zone map FAQ
How many time zones are there in the world?
There are 24 hours in a day, but more than 24 local times are in use, because some places are offset by 30 or 45 minutes. In 2026 the offsets in use run from UTC−12 to UTC+14, about 38 different ones. The IANA time zone database, which computers and phones use, lists over 400 zones because it also tracks each region’s history and daylight saving rules.
Why are time zones not straight lines?
In theory each zone is 15 degrees of longitude wide (360° ÷ 24 hours). In practice countries and states choose their own time, so boundaries follow borders, state lines and even county lines. China uses one time zone for the whole country, while the United States has six in its 50 states.
What do the colours on the map mean?
Each colour is a UTC offset as it is right now. Neighbouring hours get different colours, and the striped areas use a 30 or 45 minute offset, such as India (UTC+5:30) or Nepal (UTC+5:45). Your own zone is bright lime. Because the colours follow the live offset, they shift when a region starts or ends daylight saving time.
How does the map know the time in each zone?
Your browser calculates it from the IANA time zone database, the same data your phone uses. Nothing is hard-coded, so daylight saving time is always applied on the right date. If your browser’s copy of the database is older than the 2026e release, the site applies the handful of newer changes itself, for example Morocco’s move to permanent UTC+0 in September 2026.
What is the dark area on the map?
It shows where it is night right now. The darker band is where the sun is more than 12 degrees below the horizon, the lighter band is twilight. The line is calculated from the position of the sun at this minute, so it moves across the map through the day.
What is UTC?
UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) is the world’s reference time. Every time zone is written as an offset from it: New York is UTC−5 in winter and UTC−4 in summer, Tokyo is UTC+9 all year. UTC never changes for daylight saving time. GMT is the old name that is still used for the same time in the UK in winter.
Can I print the time zone map?
Yes. Use “Print map” on the live map, or download the free printable PDF and PNG maps of the world, the US and Europe in US Letter and A4 size from the printable maps page.
Is my data saved?
Your favourite cities and your 12 or 24-hour choice are saved only in your own browser (local storage) so they are there next time. Nothing is sent to us.
