Quick answer: the contiguous US has four time zones, each one hour apart: Eastern (UTC−5), Central (UTC−6), Mountain (UTC−7) and Pacific (UTC−8). Alaska is UTC−9 and Hawaii UTC−10. Add one hour to each during daylight saving time (March 8 to November 1 in 2026), except in Hawaii and most of Arizona.

The time zones of the United States

Federal law defines nine standard time zones, and the U.S. Department of Transportation sets their exact boundaries in 49 CFR Part 71 (49 CFR Part 71). From east to west:

  • Eastern Time (ET) – UTC−5, or UTC−4 (EDT) in summer. About half of the US population lives here.
  • Central Time (CT) – UTC−6, or UTC−5 (CDT). From the Great Lakes to the Gulf of Mexico.
  • Mountain Time (MT) – UTC−7, or UTC−6 (MDT). Arizona stays on UTC−7 all year.
  • Pacific Time (PT) – UTC−8, or UTC−7 (PDT). The West Coast and Nevada.
  • Alaska Time (AKT) – UTC−9, or UTC−8 (AKDT).
  • Hawaii-Aleutian Time (HT) – UTC−10. Hawaii does not use daylight saving time; the Aleutian Islands west of 169°30′W do (UTC−9).
  • Atlantic (AST, UTC−4), Samoa (SST, UTC−11) and Chamorro (ChST, UTC+10) – Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, American Samoa, and Guam with the Northern Mariana Islands. None of them change their clocks.

States with two time zones

14 states are split between two zones, mostly along county lines described in the regulations (49 CFR Part 71): Alaska, Florida, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Nebraska, Nevada, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Tennessee and Texas. The boundary between Eastern and Central runs through Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee and the Florida Panhandle; the Central–Mountain line crosses the Dakotas, Nebraska, Kansas and west Texas; and the Mountain–Pacific line splits Idaho and Oregon.

Daylight saving time in the US

Most of the country moves its clocks forward one hour at 2:00 a.m. on the second Sunday in March and back at 2:00 a.m. on the first Sunday in November. In 2026 that is March 8 and November 1 (NIST: Daylight Saving Time Rules). Hawaii, American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and Arizona do not observe it, except the Navajo Nation in Arizona (NIST: Daylight Saving Time Rules). A bill to make daylight saving time permanent passed the House on July 14, 2026, but has not passed the Senate (H.R.139 on Congress.gov). More on daylight saving time 2026.

Frequently asked questions

How many time zones are there in the United States?

Nine standard time zones are defined in US law: Atlantic, Eastern, Central, Mountain, Pacific, Alaska, Hawaii-Aleutian, Samoa and Chamorro. The 50 states use six of them (Eastern, Central, Mountain, Pacific, Alaska and Hawaii-Aleutian); the other three cover Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, American Samoa, Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands.

What is the time difference between Eastern and Pacific time?

Three hours, all year. Both zones change their clocks on the same dates, so when it is noon in New York it is 9 a.m. in Los Angeles in both summer and winter.

Which states have two time zones?

14 states are split: Alaska, Florida, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Nebraska, Nevada, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas. The exact lines follow county borders and rivers and are set in federal regulations (49 CFR Part 71).

Does Arizona change its clocks?

Most of Arizona stays on Mountain Standard Time (UTC−7) all year, so in summer it has the same time as California. The Navajo Nation in northeastern Arizona does use daylight saving time, while the Hopi Reservation inside it does not.

When does daylight saving time end in 2026?

On Sunday, November 1, 2026, at 2:00 a.m. local time, clocks go back one hour. It started on March 8, 2026. Hawaii, most of Arizona, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands and American Samoa do not change.

What time zone is Texas in?

Most of Texas uses Central Time. El Paso and Hudspeth counties in the far west use Mountain Time, one hour behind.
